Now the only thing left is to see how fast it sands its way around our wood rack, and for that well hand it over to our tame racing sander.

Some say, he polishes his teeth with a Nagura stone; that he keeps his chisels sharp by storing them inside a crystal pyramid; and that he once claimed to have invented the "nib" on hand saws as a way to pick up girls. All we know, is hes called The Twig!

Heres what has been absorbing any free time Ive had for the last two weeks:


Its the long overdue, long planned, new shop wood rack - and it is finally done! Wahoo!

The posts are three 2x6s laminated together with glue and screws. The arms are 2x4s, set in mortises created by missing sections of the center post lamination:



I debated using 2x6s as arms, but decided Id try the 2x4 arms first. If there are any problems, I can make 2x6 arms with a cut down tenon to fit the mortise and a supporting lower shoulder.

This is really the first phase of the "Total Shop Overhaul". For some time Ive been wanting to change things in my shop, which is in one half of our two car garage. When I stand facing into the shop half, everything makes me happy. But when I face out of the shop half, I am looking at all sorts of things that just dont feel right: recycling bins, hot water heater, boiler, kitty litter, random storage, exercise area etc. In short, Ive been wanting a 360° shop.

I thought about moving the shop out to the small shed in the yard, but its unheated and has no windows and no real door. Then I thought about building a new, dedicated shop structure in the yard. This was more exciting, but I finally realized, with a lot of help from my wife, that it just wasnt going to happen this year. In the end, I decided to go with an idea that my brother Josh championed. Im going to build a temporary (it will need to come out at some point) partition wall down the middle of the garage. This will solve the 360° shop issue, and also give us more storage (shelves on the non-shop side) for our teaching supplies/materials that are currently filling a rented storage unit (my wife and I are both teachers, and are moving to a new school and have way too much stuff that needs an accessible storage space - i.e. NOT the crawlspace).

Heres my tentative plan for the Total Shop Overhaul:

Phase 1: New Wood Rack - complete!
Phase 2: Remove Old Wood Rack to make room for the wall - pending.
Phase 3: Partition Wall w/ door - planning.
Phase 4: Window Installation - planning.
Phase 5: Rearrange Shop - dreaming.

Id love to think that this will all be done soon, as the shop looks like a bomb went off and is almost unusable at the moment. Its like being in the middle of one of those sliding picture puzzles - move this, to move that, to move that, to get to that, to reach that. Frustrating! But the reality, especially with the new job, is that it is going to take a while.

Sigh.

Holy crap! It dawned on me this morning that I started the Penultimate Woodshop mid-summer two years ago. I just checked the blog archive, and my fist post was two years ago, yesterday.

Its been a great two years and Im striving to keep the posts coming semi-regularly and working to build the online community even more by contributing to the Modern Woodworkers Association.

Id like to thank everyone for reading and joining me on this delightful online woodworking journey. Ive made many good friends and had many opportunities I wouldnt otherwise have had. Thank you all.

second post in a planned series ...

its hard to believe because snow now covers the bench seats in the photo above, but were only about two and a half months from this opening photo. at our house, its all about the sunshine, all the time .... this side faces due southeast, which lets the morning sun come into the bedroom and bathroom below on the right end, and the afternoon light shine in the left end living room, and opposite side of the house. our previous house, from 1974-1996 was on red mountain road, about 15 miles from where we live now... that house was in a beautiful spot with a nice valley view, but was tucked up fairly tightly against a sizable bump in the landscape called, fittingly, red mountain. we were on the wrong side of the mountain .... in the winter, the sun was gone by 2:30 or so.

this time, either by luck or a dogged persistence, or both, we ended up with a house and shop that get very early morning sun and some of the last sun in town ... in designing both the house and the shop, attention was paid to maximizing that sunlight .... it is vermont, and winters are long and in general, tend to cloudiness. so, when you, have some sun, you want to get as much of it as you can .... our garage, for instance, is close, but detached, so as to get that morning light into the bedroom and bathroom below .... personal, (but imho, worthy), obsession ... click the photos to enlarge them ...
but, at all times of a sunny day, its a delight ... lighting the spaces and the furniture ... yeah ... the cherry bureau was for our own house ... the first piece of real furniture i have made for us, intentionally, (not a prototype or mockup), in a long time. talk about a special spot ...
morning sun in all of these photos ... kitchen, dining and living room here ... like the shop, which we built and lived in first, we designed this house to be, wherever possible, one room deep, meaning you can look in the front window from outside in front, and out the back window on the other side ... a principal i think i picked up from a book i get from the library every once in a while, called a pattern language by christopher alexander. one of my favorite quotes from that book goes like this:

he also goes on to say inside that the patterns are regarded by the authors not as infallible, but as hypotheses. meaning to me ... read em, but do what you want with them as ideas ... we did ... great book, but expensive last time i looked ... and mirrors ... you cant say enough about them .... this one was born of a need to squeeze a full length mirror in somewhere handy. its tapered, and angled, slightly, so the out of verticalness of it lends interest but yet doesnt distort the reflection.... we have another of these in a small half bath by the front door ... they infallibly make the room seem bigger ..
amaryllis with prayer flags ... and for a really nice interior design effect, you cant beat a good houseplant .... this one kit picked up cheap at the local shaws grocery and this is its second four flower effort ... $5., well spent for about 3 weeks of flowering so far ...

Over the past five years or so, we taken on more repairs and restoration of worthy antiques for the folks in our area .... Its great work on a number of levels: its a break from the routine; it gives us a chance to be heroes by saving or polishing items of, in some cases, extreme sentimental value; its a quick project rather than something you work on for days or weeks ; and the work is often challenging and thought provoking. Weve learned to try to do no harm by doing as little as possible to get things back in shape. Over the last year and a half we have had the good fortune to work with a couple who suffered a pretty serious fire and have learned many techniques for cleaning smoke damaged furniture . The star of this post I have written about before. The client had it for a long time, having chosen it when his late grandmothers possessions were divied up.

Here Im about to start on the touch up ... We talked to about a million people about this piece ... Its old; as far as we could tell, no one has ever messed with the paintings; its important to the client ... he got it from his grandmother and, though its hard to photograph, in person you can clearly see his name (Chinn) and the date 1706, a year his ancestor married and built a large home in Virginia that still stands today. So, is it possible this chest has passed down on the male side of his family for over 300 years???? The client was floored when we found this. One dealer I spoke with felt maybe it was not quite that old....Others were not so sure ... Regardless, it was now an important family piece for sure ...
I have lightened the photo and changed the contrast, but here it is.... there are other writings on two of the other panels, but they are not as easy to translate.

After testing a small area of the paint (for about the third or fourth time), with a white paper towel and denatured alcohol, we rub coated the first panel with sealcoat, a dewaxed shellac.
That provided a barrier coat and I built and blended on top of that with three colors of latex paint on the same brush at the same time ... I often use this technique when recoloring antique finishes ...
dab it on ... smush it around and redab ... if you go too far, which I did a couple of times on this project, the barrier shellac coat allows you to erase your mistakes by rubbing with alcohol to go back to the beginning ... recoat over the color when youre happy ..
I guess blot is the right word. You kind of pounce it with a smushed up paper towel until it looks right.

The top looked like it might be a challenge, but we cruised through it to wrap it up ... When I delivered it yesterday, the client said it now looked better than it did before the fire, a high compliment for sure ...
